Here at Signature Landscaping, we understand the importance of building a beautiful outdoor living space for the entire family to enjoy. Our vast experience in building in a harsh environment, where products need to withstand the freeze-thaw cycles of the winter and the intense summer heat.
For homeowners across Mississauga and the GTHA, choosing the right contractor for your paver stone project can mean the difference between a patio that lasts decades and one that shifts after a few winters.
At Signature Landscape Construction, we’re a full-service landscape design-build contractor based in Mississauga, that services the GTHA.
We pride ourselves on creating timeless outdoor spaces, that enhance your property's curb appeal and add value and functionality to your home's exterior.
Interlocking Concrete Pavers
These modular units lock together with tight joints, creating a functional outdoor space that handles anything your family can throw at it. Signature Landscaping only uses high quality material suppliers, which consist of Best Way, Techo Bloc, Unilock, and Permacon offering hundreds of colours and texture options.
Interlocking patterns include herringbone for high-traffic zones, running bond for contemporary layouts, and modular shapes for visual interest.
The major advantage of this systems allows for easy and low maintenance, the ability to handle heavy traffic, and functionality of being able to replace individual interlocking stones in the event of damage.
Natural Flagstone
Quarried stone options like Eramosa, Wiarton, and Indiana limestone create an organic, high-end aesthetic that’s hard to replicate with concrete. Flagstone naturally features long lasting slip-resistant textures, making it popular for pool decks and walkways.
Large-Format Concrete Slabs
Sizes up to 24”x36” create clean, contemporary lines with significantly fewer joints resulting in low maintenance . These patio slabs pair well with modern architecture and minimalist planting, delivering the straight-line aesthetic popular in newer GTA subdivisions. Fewer joints mean less polymeric sand loss and reduced weed infiltration over time.
Design impacts how your outdoor space feels and functions more than the stone selection alone. Every Mississauga property presents unique conditions—lot shape, grade changes, sun exposure, and how your family actually uses the yard.

Laying Patterns
Borders and Inlays
Creating a landscape design that incorporates contrasting stone colours define patio edges and create visual framing. A darker border around lighter pavers makes the space feel intentionally designed rather than arbitrarily paved. Stone inlays under a dining table or fire pit draw the eye to focal points and break up large expanses.
Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Milton and surrounding GTHA, patios must handle heavy snow loads, de-icing salts, and multiple freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Generic climate advice doesn’t cut it—here’s what actually works in the GTA.
Frost Resistance and Thickness
We at Signature landscaping understand the importance of base installation, our team excavates 9inchs below grade and installs a 6 inch base of 3/4 inch gravel to ensure the freeze cycle does not affect your pavers. This depth prevents frost heaving when soil freezes and thaws. High quality materials rated for Canadian climates are non-negotiable.
Slip Resistance
Textured surfaces matter especially poolside. Both flagstone and paver stones offer naturally slip-resistant profiles safe for kids and seniors when wet. Travertine stays cool enough for bare feet even in direct July sun, making it ideal for swim areas.
Colour and Heat
Lighter greys and beiges stay noticeably cooler in July-August sun. Darker charcoals and onyx tones absorb more heat and feel warmer under bare feet. For patios used barefoot regularly, lighter colours improve summer comfort.
Salt and Stain Resistance
interlocking stone resist salt damage better than standard concrete because their near-zero absorption prevents crystallization damage. Natural stone benefits from annual sealing to repel leaf tannins, BBQ grease, and wine stains. Sealed flagstone maintains its aesthetic appeal years longer than unsealed alternatives.
Our expert team regularly designs and installs different patio styles for GTA homeowners, from family-friendly spaces to luxury pool decks. Here’s what we build most often.
Classic Interlock Patios
Tumbled-style with softened edges and warm beige/grey blends suit older Mississauga and Etobicoke neighbourhoods. Curving edges create intimate spaces while the weathered appearance looks established from day one. This style delivers durable results that age gracefully over decades.
Modern style interlocking stone with straight lines and darker grey tones suit newer Oakville and Milton neighbourhoods, appealing to the younger generation. Larger patio slabs help create modern backyard oasis.
Poolside Patios
Slip-resistant stones, integrated coping, and sufficient deck space for loungers. Landscape lighting extends usability into evenings and adds ambiance.
Base preparation is the difference between a patio that lasts decades and one that shifts after a couple of winters. This is where cutting corners destroys long lasting performance. The stuff you don't see is just as important as the stuff you see, when its comes to durability for your next project. This is why we emphasizes proper preparation techniques' to our team to give you exceptional results every time.
Site Assessment
Grading and drainage evaluation comes first. Clay soil conditions common in many GTA subdivisions require specific approaches—clay drains poorly and expands/contracts with moisture changes. Understanding existing drainage patterns informs patio placement and base design.
Excavation Depth
For proper backyard paver installation our team excavates down 8-10” depth. Poor soil conditions may demand deeper bases. Complete removal of organic material—topsoil, grass, roots, decomposable matter—prevents uneven settling that causes patio failure.
Base Material and Compaction
Base installation requires (¾” minus) to be installed by our team in multiple lifts, each lift is sprayed down with water to help with compaction then a plate compactor is used to compact the granular before the next layer. Our team installs 6 inch of base applied in 2 inch layers which achieves the density required to prevent shifting.
Leveling Layer
A 1 inch leveling bed of HPB is installed on-top of the 3/4 mins gravel, and packed down, this material gives us the ability to level the paving stones.
Edge Restraints and Jointing
Once all paver stones are installed and all our decorative borders are cut in we install aluminum edging restraints which prevents lateral movement of outer stones, helping with the durability of the job. Without them, outer pavers gradually shift outward, creating cracking in the polymeric sand which eventually creates failure throughout the patio. Polymeric sand contains binding agents that resist weed infiltration and ant tunneling better than standard jointing sand.
Project Clean-up
We understand a project like this can be intrusive to your home and leaving the site like we found it is important to us. Once a project is complete our team comes in and cleans up your outdoor space before returning your transformed space back to you.

Stone/Interlock Patio Advantages
Compared to Poured Concrete
Broom-finished or stamped concrete costs less upfront in some cases but develops cracks over time—especially in our climate. An asphalt driveway comparison applies here too: poured surfaces lack the repairability of modular systems. Pattern updates require major demolition rather than simple stone replacement.
Compared to Wood/Composite Decks
Decks solve elevation challenges better than patios when door thresholds sit high above grade. However, both wood and composite require different maintenance routines. Many clients install a small deck for the entry transition combined with a larger stone patio for the primary entertaining area—a practical hybrid approach.
When Stone Patios Win
Ground-level backyards, pool areas, and spaces where long-term durability plus resale value are priorities. A well-installed stone patio is perceived as a completed improvement, while decks sometimes carry maintenance liability perception.
